Foundation for Developmental Disabilities Fuels Innovation as Media Makers Explore Virtual Reality

Unlocking Creativity in a Whole New Dimension: Media Makers VR Update

Imagine stepping into a world where creativity knows no limits—where a paintbrush isn’t held, but waved through the air, and a dance floor can be anywhere you dream it to be. At Outside The Lens, that world is becoming a reality (literally!) for our Media Makers students. Through the power of Virtual Reality (VR), we’re giving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities the tools to explore, create, and express themselves in ways never before possible.

Leveling Up: VR Training with a Tech Guru

Before our students could dive into this futuristic adventure, our educators needed a crash course in all things VR. Enter Sasha Zabegalin, a Self-Expression Technologist and the mastermind behind SCRNWEAR. Sasha brought a wealth of knowledge in human-computer interaction and the fusion of fashion and technology.

Media Educator Ed Gahbler had this to say about the experience: “The training really improved my understanding of VR in the broader XR (Extended Reality) landscape. VR isn’t just a cool gadget—it’s an immersive learning tool that can take students beyond textbooks and traditional classrooms into interactive, unforgettable experiences.” Thanks to this training, our educators are now equipped to guide students through an immersive, tech-driven creative journey.

Making an Impact: How VR is Changing Lives

Since launching VR into our curriculum, we’ve witnessed jaw-dropping transformations. Students are tapping into creativity like never before, using VR as a tool for self-expression, empowerment, and even physical breakthroughs.

Meet Nate: Despite limited motor function in his right hand, Nate has discovered a newfound ability to create in VR. The controllers enable him to paint, draw, and play games with ease—something he never thought possible in the physical world.

Gio’s Dance Revolution: A VR dance tutorial introduced Gio to a love for movement, turning him into a passionate dancer. Now, dancing is an essential part of his identity, bringing joy and confidence to his everyday life.

Jess’ Virtual Journeys: Once reserved in class, Jess has blossomed in the VR space. Thanks to virtual field trips using BRINK Traveller, she’s explored Italy, Russia, and Red Rock Canyon—all from her headset! Inspired by these adventures, she’s now diving into 3D design with newfound artistic passion.

These are just a few examples of how VR is unlocking abilities, interests, and confidence in ways we never imagined.

From Virtual to Reality: Enter 3D Printing

Now that students have built strong foundations in VR, it’s time to take things to the next level—by bringing their digital creations into the physical world through 3D printing! Using Gravity Sketch, students are transforming their VR art into 3D printable designs. Educator Ed Gahbler has streamlined the process, ensuring their digital masterpieces can successfully be printed and refined.

Once printed, students add finishing touches with sanding and artistic embellishments using acrylic markers. This hands-on experience bridges the gap between the virtual and physical, giving students a full-circle creative journey from imagination to tangible reality.

What’s Next? More Innovation, More Creativity

As we continue integrating 3D printing into the curriculum, the possibilities for student projects are endless. From functional designs to artistic sculptures, we can’t wait to see what our students bring to life next!
