Creative Educator's Workshop #2: Media Matters

Tuesday, March 10 2020 4:00 PM

Media literacy is the ability to identify, explore, and analyze different types of media and build understanding of the messages they’re sending. Our students engage in a lot of screen time, taking in information from a wide array of sources, far beyond the traditional media of prior generations. But all media shares one thing: Someone created it, and it was created for a reason. Understanding that reason is the basis of media literacy.

As educators, how can we make sure we’re choosing media that is truthful and relevant for our students? When we examine different forms of popular media with our students - movies, video games, commercials, how can we tell what message they are sending? How can we be smart consumers of media? Through an exploration of representation, we will create mixed-media imagery that examines and reclaims student identity.

During this participatory workshop we will explore the concepts of media literacy within a classroom setting, and how we can apply this understanding to various curriculum, to empower students as critical consumers and conscious creators of media. You will walk away with an arts integrated project & lesson plan you can use with your own students.
