Meet our Volunteer, Christina Martin!

Meet our Volunteer, Christina Martin!

OTL Media Educator Raquel Mendoza sits down with one of our amazing volunteer teaching assistants, Christina, to learn more about why she chooses to give her time and talents to OTL:

Christina, you’ve been a wonderful asset to the OTL program! You’re a great teaching assistant, mentor and a recent graduate from Yale. The students thrive on your extensive photography knowledge and thoughtfulness. Please tell me more about yourself.

Why did you choose to volunteer with OTL?

I chose to volunteer for OTL because I recognize the value of art in education. Art has always been an important part of my education so I hope to be able to use what I have learned to help enrich students' experiences in the arts too.

What have you learned, or do you hope to learn during your volunteer experience?

I am learning through this experience not only more about children's art making, but also the art of teaching art. It's rewarding to be able to help students express themselves and their ideas through photography.

As a photographer, how do you think our digital/media program is helping our students in education?

I think that OTL's digital media program helps our students in education by learning to express themselves in alternative ways, such as not only verbally but also visually. Helping the students express what they are trying to say through a compelling image allows them to engage in a discussion with the world around them.

How will this experience help you with your future goals?

As I've always have valued my education very highly, I hope to be involved in the field of education one day. I know a good education can make a world of a difference in a student's life, in helping her achieve her goals, living up to her potential.

Anything else you would like to add?

I'm so happy to be a part of OTL! It's great to pass along my passion for the arts to young and bright students.

Thank you Christina for being a part of the OTL team! If you’re interested in finding more about about volunteer and internship opportunities with Outside the Lens, visit www.outsidethelens.org/volunteer.php, or contact volunteer [at] outsidethelens [dot] org.
